Spring Home Maintenance: 10 Things to Check This Season

After a long winter, your home could probably use a little attention. Spring home maintenance is a great opportunity to clean things up, check for winter damage and get your property ready for the warmer months.

Here are 10 things we recommend putting on your spring checklist.

1. Clean Your Gutters

Winter weather can leave gutters full of leaves, branches and debris. Give them a good cleaning and make sure water is flowing properly through the downspouts.

Meanwhile, it’s also a good time to check that water is being directed away from your home’s foundation.

2. Check the Roof

Take a look for damaged or missing shingles, damaged flashing or areas where water may be getting in.

You don’t necessarily need to climb onto the roof yourself. If something doesn’t look right, have it inspected by a professional.

3. Look for Winter Damage

Once you’ve checked the roof, walk around the exterior of your home and look for cracks, damaged siding, loose railings or broken fences.other issues that may have appeared over the winter.

Small problems are generally easier to deal with before they become bigger ones.

4. Clean Your Windows

Next, clean your windows, inside and out. You’ll be surprised how much brighter your home can feel once the winter grime is gone.

While you’re at it, check the screens and look for damaged seals.

5. Get Your Yard Ready

For example, remove fallen branches, leaves and other winter debris from the yard.

If you have a lawn, garden or landscaping, spring is also a good time to assess what needs attention and start planning for the months ahead.

6. Check Your Outdoor Spaces

Meanwhile, don’t forget about your outdoor spaces. Take a look at your deck, patio, stairs and railings.

Look for loose boards, damaged surfaces or anything that could become a safety issue. Because a good cleaning and a fresh coat of stain can also help bring an older deck back to life.

7. Clean or Replace Your HVAC Filters

Spring is a good reminder to check your furnace and HVAC filters.

If they’re dirty, replace them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If your system needs servicing, it’s better to deal with it before you need it.

8. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Check that your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly and replace batteries where needed.

It’s a small job, but an important one.

9. Tackle the Spring Cleaning

Now for the part most of us think about when spring arrives.

Clean the windows, wash doors and baseboards, organize closets and clear out things you no longer use.

If you’re thinking about selling your home this year, this is also a great time to start decluttering.

10. Take a Fresh Look at Your Home

Walk through your home as if you’re seeing it for the first time.

What needs repairing? Does anything look outdated? Noteworthy issues you’ve been meaning to fix?

Additionally, if you’re planning to sell, don’t automatically assume you need to renovate everything. Sometimes a deep clean, a few small repairs and some decluttering can make a bigger difference than an expensive renovation.
